Observatory will issue Standby Signal No. 1 at 12:20 pm.

The area of low pressure over the northeastern part of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression.  According to the present forecast, the circulation of the tropical depression will be relatively small.  It will be slow-moving and maintain a distance of over 400 km from Hong Kong for the rest of today.  

Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force for most of today.  The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify gradually.  It is more likely to linger over the northeastern part of the South China Sea over the weedend.
