The People's Liberation Army Navy's Shandong aircraft carrier strike group arrived in Hong Kong this morning for a five-day visit, and the warships will be open to the public this weekend.
At around 6 a.m. this morning, China's first domestically developed aircraft carrier, the Shandong, entered Hong Kong waters, passing Waglan Island and Po Toi Island before approaching the southern coast of Hong Kong Island.
On the deck of the aircraft carrier were 10 fighter jets. Viewed head-on, the design features of the Shandong were clearly visible.
Against the backdrop of police vessels and fireboats, the carrier's grandeur was even more striking.
The strike group consists of four ships. Leading the way, ahead of the Shandong, were the guided missile frigate Yuncheng and the guided missile destroyer Zhanjiang, which displayed a banner celebrating the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China.
Bringing up the rear was the guided missile destroyer Yanan.
This is an aerial view of the Shandong. Sailors on the deck formed a human slogan with the Chinese characters "guo an jia hao," which means "national safety brings prosperity."
Eager citizens secured vantage points early to welcome the warships. At Ap Lei Chau's South Horizons, photography enthusiasts and military buffs gathered, many waving national flags.
Mr. Yiu said he's thrilled to see China's prosperity and strength today. He brought different cameras to capture an array of shots, including close-ups of the warship with landmarks such as Lamma Island's three chimneys and wind turbines.
Mr. Yu came all the way from Shenzhen to Hong Kong at 5 a.m., calling it an honour and pride to witness the Shandong, grateful to Hong Kong as mainland residents rarely have such precious opportunities.
At Cyberport, office staff even risked being late for work just to catch a glimpse of the warships.
Mr. Shang said he had already told his boss he would run late, adding that the experience was totally worthy of his time. He even urged his boss to watch from the office as well.
With excellent morning visibility, the warships were clearly visible from shore even without binoculars.
The Shandong and Yanan anchored west of Victoria Harbour, near Tsing Yi and Kau Yi Chau, while the Zhanjiang and Yuncheng docked at the Ngon Shuen Chau Barracks.
