A pet shop owner is suspected of stealing some 30 cats entrusted to him by customers, with a total value topping 600,000 dollars.

It is understood he used the cats as collateral to settle debts with a finance company.

The pet shop is located on Dock Street in Hung Hom.

Police earlier received reports from pet owners suspecting the cats had been stolen, reportedly including multiple British shorthairs and ragdolls. Some cats were handed to the shop for care while others were put up for sale.

Following an investigation, police arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of theft.

The felines were later found in Yau Ma Tei and Yuen Long.

Initial checks confirmed the cats are in good health.

Sources say the shop owner took out a loan of about 200,000 dollars from a finance company in August last year but failed to repay the money.

On Monday, debt collectors visited the store and the owner allegedly offered the cats as collateral, which was accepted.
