A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Japan's southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima this afternoon.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicentre was off the Tokara Islands and there was no threat of tsunami.

The area has been hit by a series of earthquakes since June 21st.

A damage estimate released in March of this year said a Nankai Trough megaquake could, in the worst-case scenario, kill close to 300,000 people and destroy more than 2 million buildings.

On Tuesday, at a meeting of the Central Disaster Management Council, Japan's government officially endorsed a plan that calls for an 80 percent cut in the death toll and a 50 percent reduction in structural damage to be attained over the next decade.
