Today marks the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

To celebrate the occasion, a flag-raising ceremony was held at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai this morning.

Stepping into Golden Bauhinia Square from the Convention and Exhibition Centre, Chief Executive John Lee and his wife were welcomed by uniformed groups.

The flag-raising ceremony began with the flag and ceremonial guards marching into the square with the Chinese-style goose-step.

In attendance were former Hong Kong SAR chief executives, including Leung Chun-ying, now serving as a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Donald Tsang; and Carrie Lam.

Also attending the ceremony were mainland officials including Zhou Ji, director of the central government's liaison office; representatives of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and other mainland organisations stationed in the city.

Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal Roberto Ribeiro and other senior officials was also present.

Former SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa was once again absent.

There was a flypast of Government Flying Service helicopters carrying the national and SAR flags, while fireboats and police vessels gave water salutes in Victoria Harbour.

Prior to the ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square, central government units in Hong Kong such as the liaison office and the PLA's Hong Kong Garrison also held their own flag-raising ceremonies.

Speaking at a reception in the Convention and Exhibition Centre, Chief Executive John Lee said the city is witnessing the results of the policies implemented under his administration.

Lee said over the past three years, the government has strived to improve residents' livelihoods, completed Article 23 legislation and improved local governance.

The CE said since he took office, the city's economic growth has turned from negative to positive, while the government is doing its best to deal with the housing and land supply issues.

Citing a Chinese poem, Lee suggested he would rather take the difficult path as a reformer than the easy path by doing nothing.

The CE added Hong Kong must further integrate into the overall development of the mainland and take advantage of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle as it undergoes a period of economic transformation.
