A sweltering heatwave across Europe has pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Spain, France and Portugal.

A cleaning service worker in Barcelona collapsed and died after working several hours in the heat on Saturday.

The Caparica beach in western Portugal was full of swimmers on Sunday with two-thirds of the country on high alert for high temperatures and potential hill fires. The daytime temperatures in Lisbon may soar to 42 degrees.

In France, the meteorological office says temperatures may reach 37 degrees in Paris, and up to 40 degrees in some southern and western regions in the next few days.

French interior minister Bruno Retailleau convened a crisis meeting on the heatwave Sunday evening to review the guidelines.

Many departments were under orange alert, the second-highest level, and people are warned to stay out of the sun and keep hydrated.

Some experts link increasing frequencies of extreme weather in southern Europe to climate change.
