All tropical cyclone warning signals were cancelled in the early afternoon.
At 2 p.m., the tropical depression over the Leizhou Peninsula was centred about 430 kilometres west-southwest of Hong Kong and is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour.
The rainbands associated with it will still bring squalls to the territory today.
There will also be swells.
The observatory has urged the public to stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports.
