A medical group warns that a large proportion of Hong Kong people may be overweight.

They say being overly heavy could lead to other health issues, and many who are affected do not know about the consequences.

Ms Chan has always been slightly overweight but ballooned to 96 kilograms at one point. She was diagnosed with high cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

She tried many ways to keep fit, but said it was really hard to be on diets and do exercises regularly.

Suggested by her doctor, she decided to undergo a weekly injection of medication formulated for diabetes.

She has since shedded 18 kilograms in weight.

The Hong Kong College of Cardiology interviewed more than 500 city residents and over half of them had a body mass index, or BMI of over 23, which is considered overweight, but many have no idea that's an issue.

The body said diet management and exercise alone may be difficult for some to maintain for a long-term. If these first steps do not work, they may seek doctor's advice on possible medication and surgery.

Dr. Chan Yu-ho, council member of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology said, "doctors will discuss with the patients, assess the patients and consider giving medications to control the body weight, and try to optimize the risk factors. This is the step two. They are not mutually exclusive and it does not mean medication is a must but we have to go step by step."

Doctors remind members of public that obesity could increase the risk for a number of chronic diseases, such as heart diseases and even cancer. It is better to consult with a doctor for medical advice and treatment.
