A senior U.S. official has told Reuters news agency that artificial Intelligence firm DeepSeek is helping China's military and intelligence perations.
The Chinese tech startup is alleged to have sought the use of Southeast Asian shell companies to access high-end semiconductors that cannot be shipped to China under U.S. rules.
A senior State Department official in Washington said DeepSeek had willingly provided support to China's military and intelligence operations.
The company is also referenced more than 150 times in procurement records for the People's Liberation Army.
In January, DeepSeek shocked the global tech community with its low-cost and high-performance AI model that many compared to industry leader ChatGPT.
The U.S. conclusions reflect Washington's suspicions that DeepSeek may have exaggerated its capabilities and relied heavily on U.S. technology.
DeepSeek did not respond to the allegations.
