Donald Trump said Iran gave the United States notice prior to shooting missiles at its military base in Qatar, which he said made it possible for no lives to be lost. The attack was in retaliation for the U.S. attack on its nuclear sites.
On his Truth Social social media platform, the U.S. president wrote that 14 missiles were fired by Iran, 13 of which were intercepted and one "set free" as it was headed in a non-threatening direction.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard released video of a missile launch, which its colonel said was aimed at the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Over the streets of Doha, explosions were seen in the night sky as the missiles were intercepted. People capturing the images on their phones. An Associated Press correspondent reported seeing drones in the sky over Doha on their way south.
Hassan Ramadan from the Associated Press said. "A short while ago, we were just about to put the kids to sleep. We heard loud explosion noises outside. I went outside to check and I saw drones flying from the northern part of Qatar heading south. I saw some drones being intercepted by the Qatar defence systems, it was scary. Many people never witnessed this in Qatar. Some friends in the southern part of Qatar, as I said, near Al Rayyan area, saw some parts of the drones falling in their streets and their gardens."
Iran announced the attack on state television. A spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard said the strikes were "a clear and direct (message) to the White House and its allies." Qatar condemned Iran after the strikes, calling them a blatant violation of its sovereignty.
A spokesman for Qatar's foreign ministry went on to say the attack was a contradiction to the principles of good neighbours and represents an aggression on international legitimacy and international law.
He said the State of Qatar confirms that it hold the right of response in accordance with international laws and the shape and size of this attack.
