Despite suggesting a two week period before taking action, the U.S. carried out airstrikes on three of Iran's nuclear facilities.

President Trump called the attack a "success" and said Iran's nuclear ambitions have been "obliterated."

Israel thanked the U.S. for its direct military support which involved the use of special bunker bombs and B2 planes at three sites.

Iran says there has been no radiation contamination outside the sites, and is considering a response.

Time to strike. Donald Trump in the Situation Room overseeing the bombing of Iran's nuclear sites.

Having said he'd give diplomacy two weeks, after just a couple of days, the U.S. President sent B2 bombers with bunker busting bombs.

Vice President Vance and other cabinet members alongside Trump who says Iran must not have a nuclear bomb.

Three sites were hit amid mixed reports about how close Iran was to creating a nuclear weapon.

The Fordow nuclear facility hidden deep in a mountainside south of Tehran. This was the site Israel struggled to impact.

A research centre at Isfahan which was struck by Israel yesterday and was shown on fire by Iranian television.

And a third site at Natanz also in the centre of Iran was targeted too. Iran has warned of consequences.

Trump announced the strikes first on his platform writing U.S. bombers were clear of Iranian airspace. Finishing by saying now is the time for peace.

Shortly afterwards, the President addressed his nation, telling Americans Iran's nuclear ambitions are over.

"Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated," said Trump. "Iran the bully of the Middle East must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier."

In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump in a "warm" telephone call shortly after the bombings.

In a video, released by the Prime Minister's office, Netanyahu says: I promised Iran's nuclear facilities would be destroyed, that promise was kept.

He said: There was full coordination between me and Trump who he thanked from the bottom of his heart.

Israel's military then released more footage of their own aerial attacks on Iran. The IDF blowing up "missile launchers" and Iranian fighter jets on the ground.

Israel has claimed control of much of airspace over their enemy for days. Netanyahu justified U.S. involvement because of the "threat to our very existence."

"We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before," said Trump. "And we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel. I want to thank the Israeli military for the wonderful job they've done. And most importantly, I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world has not seen in many, many decades. Hopefully we will no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope that's so."

The U.S.' Spirit stealth bomber is thought to be the only fighter jet in the world that can drop the 14,000 kilogram bombs, known as Massive Ordinance Penetrators.

This planes that carried them, seen at a base in Missouri, cost 2 billion U.S. dollars with a range of over 6,000 nautical miles, can be refuelled while in flight.

Six of these "bunker buster bombs" were reportedly dropped at Fordow.

Jon Ganbrell, of the Associated Press, said: "Fordow is dug deeply under a mountainside and it's long been believed that America would need to use specialised bunker busting bombs to destroy the facility. Now, Iran has acknowledged these attacks but we don't yet know just how much damage has been done."

Iran acknowledged strikes on three nuclear sites by the "enemy" on state television The U.S. informed Iran through diplomatic channels ahead of the strikes and say they are not trying to instigate regime change.

Later in a phone interview on the same channel, an expert said the strikes did not cause nuclear fallout and neighbours monitoring in the region back this up.

The head of Iran's nuclear safety department told the anchor despite this "criminal attack", there has had no radiation contamination or any radiation outside the sites.

Reza Kardan then suggested life could go on as normal.
