Elderly man convicted of manslaughter for strangling mentally ill daughter

A 74-year-old man was found guilty of manslaugher for strangling his mentally ill daughter.
The defendant, a former security guard, lived with his daughter in Hoi Wen House at Hoi Fu Court in West Kowloon.
The attack took place three years ago.
The father went to the bathroom at 1 a.m. but was stopped by his daughter who scolded him for not flushing the toilet and struck him with an umbrella repeatedly.
He did not fight back at that point but subsequently went to strangle her with his hands.
The deceased was diagnosed with mental illnesses, including autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder.
The father, who was charged with murder, had initially intended to plead guilty to manslaughter but was not accepted by the prosecutor.
Deliberating for less than an hour, the jury reached unanimous verdict and found the defendant guilty of manslaughter.
The judge has scheduled sentencing for August 6th, pending reports on the man's mental condition.
