Hong Kong-born Hollywood comedian Jimmy O. Yang is back in the city after more than twenty years and took to the stage with five sold-out stand-up comedy shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom.
TVB News spoke with the Hong Kong-American actor.
Born in Hong Kong and emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 13, actor Jimmy O. Yang has been known for his roles in Crazy Rich Asian and Interior Chinatown among other Hollywood productions.
Jimmy O Yang: "You go to any Chinese restaurant, and there's about 485 items on the menu, and there's just one dude back there in the kitchen. He's not even a chef, he is just somebody's uncle from Hong Kong."
Jimmy has also built a global following with his wit and cross-cultural observations in his stand-up comedy shows.
Jimmy O Yang: "The more you don't fit in, the more you actually do well in the standup. Every kid that wants to fit in, it's ok to not fit in. It's letting people inside of your life and telling your truth, right? Like all my jokes, it's very truthful. Like I want the audience to watch my comedy and be like, oh my god, that's so true. My wife is like that, or like my parents are like that, right? I think that's when people laugh the most. And now as I grow as a person, I want to share those experiences with my audiences as well. I want to get in touch more with my Chinese side so that's why it's so exciting to be able to come back."
Returning to Hong Kong for the first time after more than 20 years, Jimmy was also invited by the Hong Kong Tourism Board to explore iconic spots, including Man Mo Temple and Ngong Ping 360.
Jimmy O Yang:" There's still an energy in Hong Kong that I'm so used to as a kid. There's so many good restaurants on every street every neighbourhood you know. So it's really nice to be back. It still feels like home."
And it wasn't just the food or fanfare that struck him.
He noted how recent Hong Kong movies including The Last Dance and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In have shown the city's strong cinematic potential.
Jimmy O Yang: "Those movies should be watched at a global stage. And I was so proud to have seen those two movies."
Jimmy O Yang: "This show is gonna have 100 percent tariff. Because I am made in China."
Now that Jimmy is staying in Hong Kong for a month, he says he watches TVB News every night -- and those China-U.S. headlines?
They've become the latest spark for creativity as he said: to create, you have to keep up.
