Former long-distance runner and Olympic gold medallist Wang Junxia today becomes a Hong Kong resident.
This came after Wang and her daughter applied for new identity cards under the government's Quality Migrant Admission Scheme.
After becoming new Hong Kongers, Wang Junxia and her daughter, Wang Danting, showed up at a jogging event held by Hong Kong Talent Engage and Hong Kong Jockey Club.
52-year-old Wang Junxia, widely known as "Divine Deer of the Orient," won her gold medal in the 5,000 metres at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Speaking to the media, Wang said she first visited Hong Kong in 1996 after the Olympics and her first impression was that the city was "prosperous."
Because of her nickname, Wang said she considered herself having some sort of connection with the SAR,
which is often referred as "Pearl of the Orient." When asked about her plans in the city, Wang said she wishes to contribute to local sports development.
Like her mother, 15-year-old Wang Danting is a track and field athlete.
Born and raised in the U.S., the teenager explained why she wanted to reside in Hong Kong. WANG DANTING:"Hong Kong is a really interesting place, like it's a big city. That's pretty attractive. We don't have really tall buildings (in where I live in the U.S.); we only have tiny houses."
Danting added she would like to learn about Cantonese culture.
Lawmaker Shang Hailong, who is helping the Wang family to settle here, said the government hopes more top talent can run businesses as a means to drive the SAR's economic developmen
Shang Hailong says he is sure that more athletes will apply to become Hong Kongers through talent schemes in the future.
