U.S. President Donald Trump will extend a June 19th deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the U.S. assets of short video app TikTok by 90 days.
This despite a law that mandates a sale or a shutdown if no significant progress is made by the deadline.
Trump told reporters that he thinks President Xi Jinping will "ultimately approve" a deal to divest TikTok's business in the United States. It will be the third time Trump has extended the deadline.
The first one was through an executive order on January 20th -- his first day in office.
The second time was in April when White House officials believed they were nearing a deal to spin off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new company with American ownership.
This fell apart after China backed out following Trump's tariff announcement in April.
