A joint survey by two organisations found that 44 percent of AIDS patients had missed taking their antiretroviral drug on at least one day in the past six months.

Between April and May this year, The Society for AIDS Care and The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Hong Kong interviewed 54 AIDS patients.

They found that 50 percent of patients who were below 50 years old with deteriorated economic burden would be more prone to missing out on their daily medication.

The survey also shows that 42 percent of patients failed to inform medics about missing their dose of medication.

ZEE SZE-TSING, Specialist, Infectious Disease: "They think it's okay to miss one or two doses. The consultation nowadays is still quite short. The clinics in Hong Kong are busy, so I think these patients try not to bring up too many problems. In terms of emotional, psychological, family support (for AIDS patients in Hong Kong), I think it's inadequate."
