Leaders of some of the world's biggest economic powers arrived in Kananaskis in the Canadian Rockies on Sunday for a Group of Seven summit.

The event is expected to be overshadowed by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran as well as U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war.

Tracey Furniss has more.

As world leaders were arriving in Kananaskis in Alberta Sunday for the G7 Summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a news conference that Iran "can never have a nuclear weapon."

Ursula Von Der Leyen, President of the European Commission said, "I spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu today. I reiterated Europe's commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, Israel has the right to defend itself. Iran is the principal source of regional instability, and we've always been very clear. Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. We have voiced our strong concerns over Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programme. A diplomatic solution remains the best way in the long run, to address concerns about Iran's nuclear programme. "

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in a Marine One helicopter, joining world leaders after he reportedly vetoed an Israeli plan to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in recent days.

He is expected to have a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday morning before the summit programme begins.

Australia is an invited country to the Summit, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to meet with Trump on the sidelines of the Summit. Albanese said his country has a "Do Not Travel" warning for Israel and Iran.

Anthony Albanese, Australia's Prime Minister said, "Australia has a 'Do Not Travel' warning for Israel and Iran. Australia, of course, I have expressed before, our concern about Iran gaining the capacity of nuclear weapons as something that is a threat to security in the region. But we, along with other like-minded countries, do want to see that priority on dialogue and diplomacy."

Security is tight as leaders of the Group of 7 nations - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, as well as the EU - attend the summit in the Canadian Rockies.

Trump said he may have a few new trade deals to discuss with some of the leaders attending when asked if he planned to announce any trade agreements at the G7.

Also on the agenda is the war in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is due to attend the summit and is expected to meet with Trump, a reunion coming just months after their bruising Oval Office encounter which laid bare the risks of having a meeting with the U.S. president.
