Two Chinese scientists accused of smuggling or shipping biological material into the United States will remain in custody after waiving their right to a hearing in federal court.

Yunqing Jian and Chengxuan Han made separate appearances in court in Detroit.

Han was arrested on Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

This, after arriving on a flight from China, where she is pursuing an advanced degree at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

She planned to spend a year completing a project at the University of Michigan.

Han is accused of shipping biological material months ago to staff at the lab.

In a court filing, the FBI described it as "material related to worms and that it lacked a government permit."

Jian was arrested on June 2nd.

She is charged with conspiring with her boyfriend, another scientist from China, to bring a toxic fungus into the U.S. that can attack crops.
