This pair of goggles may look similar to a virtual reality headset, but it is a device which prevents glaucoma -- a common eye disease often caused by a sustained growth of internal eye pressure, known as intraocular pressure.
The goggles contains a heat pad and a pressure adjustment system.
MINJI SEO, Director, Eyecare Enterprise:"It moisturises your eyes. The reason is because we have this heat pad, by providing a gental warmness, it relaxes your eye tissues. It boosts the natural tear secretion, which is extra helpful for dry eye people."
Apart from the goggles, the enterprise also developed a gopro camera and a mobile app, allowing users to calculate their risk of getting glaucoma within a minute. It also helps monitoring eye health indicators.
While the goggles are now available to buy, the gopro camera and the app are still in the testing phase. The team hopes the two products can be used concurrently by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, this enterprise aims to enhance the safety of railways. To do so, the team has developed a wireless and batteryless rail vibration monitoring system.
YANG Zhengbao, Associate Professor, Dpt of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering :"We capture energy from environment from electromagnetic wave. It works like our cell phones. Our cell phones can capture electromagnetic wave from satellite. We use a similar measure to capture electromagnetic wave and convert it into electricity. We install these sensors along a railway track and connect the internet. So now, railway becomes a smart railway. We can really know what is happening at each spot of the railway."
HKUST's third Unicorn Day gathered more than 100 startups.
As of May this year, the university members have founded over 1,800 active startups, including 10 unicorns.
