The Standby Signal No. 1 is expected to remain in force tonight through tomorrow morning.
This as Tropical Storm Wutip, meaning "butterfly," is moving towards Hainan Island and packing more strength.
The Hong Kong Observatory says it is assessing the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 on Friday.
Outer rainbands associated with Tropical Storm Wutip, named after the word "butterfly" in Cantonese, has brought more gloomy skies and drizzle to the city.
Winds have also picked up.
While temperatures have eased slightly from yesterday's scorching highs, the mercury across most districts still reached around 31 to 32 degrees.
With Wutip marking this year's first tropical cyclone to form over the northwestern Pacific and South China Sea, the Hong Kong Observatory also issued the city's very first Standby Signal No. 1 in the early morning.
According to the forecast track, Wutip is expected to edge towards Hainan Island and strengthen gradually before inching closer to the Leizhou Peninsula in the southernmost part of Guangdong Province and Beibu Gulf.
Unless Wutip intensifies rapidly, the Standby Signal No. 1 is expected to stay until Thursday morning.
HKO's scientific officer said while wind strength may slightly ease early Friday, Hong Kong will begin to experience a southerly airstream with squally showers and strong winds.
The observatory will monitor the strength of Wutip, its distance and local wind conditions to determine whether the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is necessary on Friday.
Spokesperson of the Hong Kong Meteorological Society, Leung Wing-mo, said variables remain when it comes to the "butterfly effect." Leung said Wutip's formation depends on whether the seawater is warm enough, but when the system passes by Hainan Island, the mountain ranges might weaken its structure -- and its strength.
Macao, meanwhile, is currently under Typhoon Signal No. 1, which is expected to remain in effect throughout the day.
