Taiwan was struck by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake at around 7 p.m.
The quake was detected about 71 kilometres south of Hualien City.
The tremors could be felt in Taipei as well.
There were no immediate reports of major damage.
The epicentre is measured at a depth of 31.1 kilometres.
Train services at Taipei Metro were temporarily suspended.
The Hong Kong Observatory recorded a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan and received multiple reports from Hong Kong residents, saying they felt the shaking for a few seconds.
