The stand-by No. 1 tropical cyclone signal remains in place as tropical depression Wutip moves across the central part of the South China Sea.

According to its present forecast track, Wutip will maintain a distance of about 700 kilometres from Hong Kong today.

Its associated outer rainbands are affecting the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong.

The stand-by signal No.1 will remain in force for most of today. Depending on its intensity, distance from Hong Kong and the change in local wind strength, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind signal No, 3 between later Thursday and Friday.

With Wutip edging closer to the coastal areas, it will be windy with occasional heavy squally showers in the latter part of the week. There will be swells.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
