Today marks the first day of the Greater Bay Area Snooker Cultural Challenge, starring world number one Judd Trump and other world-class stars such as Jack Lisowski and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Timothy Li spoke with the latter, who scored a major victory over a local veteran and shared his thoughts on the development of snooker in the city.
Taking their first ceremonial shots at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Director of Immigration Benson Kwok and world's top snooker player Judd Trump kicked off the two-day gala this morning.
Speaking about attracting more sports talent to Hong Kong, Kwok said that more snooker players have already made plans to make their way to Hong Kong.
This after snooker legends Ronnie O'Sullivan and Trump obtained residency in the city via the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme.
The games started off with Thai Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, nicknamed "F1" for his speed and aggressive style, securing a smooth victory over seasoned local player Ivan Chan.
The Thai speedster took the opportunity to praise Hong Kong's sports facilities, and pointed out that the city's aspiring snooker players have one of their own as a source of inspiration.
Queen Elizabeth Stadium is a really nice venue and is a great location.
Great atmosphere, really great crowd here.
(Hong Kong people) have Marco Fu to be their hero and he's a really good player.
Un-Nooh said he will be celebrating his first victory in the snooker challenge by enjoying some local delicacies, reiterating his love for Hong Kong's food scene.
Today, we are going to get some noodles, char siu and lotus pork.
We would love to go tonight.
Besides the top four players in today's Greater Bay Area Snooker Cultural Challenge that are set to compete in tomorrow's semifinals and finals, revellers will also get to enjoy exhibition matches between disabled athletes and international snooker stars at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
