Four Japanese self-defence force members were injured after an explosion at a U.S. military base in Okinawa where undetonated World War II bombs are stored.

The injuries to the fingers are not life-threatening.

NHK reports the military personnel were trying to remove rust when one of the devices suddenly exploded.

No U.S. service members were involved.

This is believed to be the first accident involving the Japanese unexploded ordnance disposal unit in its 50-year history.

Unexploded wartime bombs and ammunition remain buried around Japan and are sometimes dug up during construction.
