Cantonese opera, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is struggling to attract new talent.
An organisation has hosted a contest for young performers to showcase their dedication and hard work in the traditional art form.
In the legend of the White Snake, Bai Suzhen, or Madam White Snake, fights Monk Fahai to save her husband, Xu Xian, even though he once distrusted her.
When the couple encounter each other again after the battle, she struggles with the decision of whether to take him back.
Navigating these complex emotions, the actress playing Bai Suzhen is only 15 years old, and she began her journey at just 8.
Actress Chloe Fu:"I think the most unforgettable chance is like I can devote myself into a different character of each place.
The handsome Xu Xian is actually portrayed by a girl. But guys have their burden.
Actress Queena Ng:"When I'm filming a programme, I threw up three times on stage because of the horrifying decorations. My helmet is really tight that it pressed my head very tightly. It's like I can't breathe and the blood cannot flow through my brain.
Fifteen young Cantonese opera singers took part in this contest.
Susan Tse, a prominent figure in Cantonese opera and a member of the contest's organising panel, hopes to launch a cosplay Cantonese opera animation to showcase this centuries-old heritage to a global audience.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the contest. Organisers are hoping that the government will allocate more resources to create additional venues for young performers.
