Today marks the start of the three-day-long, nationwide joint university entrance exam, Gaokao, in mainland China.

More than 13 million participants are taking the exam this year, around 70,000 fewer than the year before.

Large crowds of parents packed the entrance to Shenzhen Senior High School.

The school is just one of 27,000 Gaokao exam sites across the country.

Carrying banners displaying motivational quotes from Chinese animated blockbuster "Nezha 2" in hand, parents cheered on their children as they prepare to take the exam of a lifetime.

This mother believes wearing red clothing will bring a spirit of celebration to the occasion, adding that the whole family has come to support her child, while this woman expressed her total confidence in her son's academic abilities, and stressed he'll get the top marks.

Other parents handed out sunflowers to examinees, symbolising success.

With candidates being tested on Chinese language proficiency and mathematics on the first day of this year's Gaokao, some participants shared their feelings on the special day.

This girl says she feels calmer than usual given her sufficient studies.

To ensure participants' smooth journey to exam sites, Shenzhen police deployed its arsenal of robots to provide examinees with safe passage.

In Beijing's Chaoyang district, scores of Gaokao participants were seen arriving early at their test sites.

A number of them could be seen relaxing at these rest areas set up to facilitate their best performance.

This student said he's very emotional.

He stressed the exam results represent a major new phase of his life.

A total of more than 13.3 million candidates have registered to take this year's Gaokao exam, a figure that has dropped by 70,000 compared with last year.

Exam topics for Sunday will include physics, history, English or other foreign languages, while participants will be tested on chemistry, geography, political ideology and biology on Monday.
