The Hong Kong Observatory said a broad area of low pressure over the Luzon Strait may see a tropical cyclone, though the its projected path remains highly uncertain.
According to current forecasts, Hong Kong's typhoon season could begin in the middle or latter part of next week.
The Observatory expects the low-pressure system to gradually intensify over the weekend and early next week near the waters off Luzon in the Philippines.
If the system strengthens into a tropical storm, it would be the first tropical cyclone of 2025 in the Northwest Pacific or South China Sea, and be named Butterfly.
But the forecast models currently diverge on its likely path with a European model suggesting the system will move north towards Taiwan.
China's AI models are predicting two separate low pressure systems may form with one moving toward Taiwan and another approaching Guangdong coast later next week.
