Traces of bitumen mixed with resin particles have been found in the tap water at Queen's Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court in Fanling.

The Water Supplies Department believes they came from the coating from old steel water pipes installed upstream decades ago.

Following nearly a week of investigation, it's found that the upstream steel pipes in question were laid around 1987 and span roughly 400 metres. The department added pipes should be flushed regularly.

Authorities will review maintenance records from property management firms and the Housing Department and are considering more frequent pipe flushing.

The city still has about 700 kilometers of these bitumen-coated steel pipes. Authorities now plan to replace all such similar piping across the city.

Meanwhile, the Water Supplies Department will publish daily water testing results for Queen's Hill Estate and Shan Lai Court.

The first set of results -- covering samples collected from last Friday to Monday -- showed no toxicity or carcinogenic substances.

In terms of turbidity levels, the highest was recorded at a residential building in Shan Lai Court.

Authorities said all results remained within safety standards.
