President Xi Jinping spoke with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump over the phone tonight amid stalled tariff talks. They agreed that both sides continue to implement the consensus reached in recent Geneva talks.
The long-awaited phone call between the two leaders was held at Trump's request.
State media reported that Xi told Trump to reverse "negative measures" against China.
Xi said the two sides should respect each others' concerns and steer their relationship in a good direction and strive for a win-win outcome. He called for more bilateral exchanges in diplomacy, trade, military and law enforcement to enhance cooperation.
The Chinese leader also stressed that Washington should carefully handle the Taiwan issue.
Trump said Chinese students were welcome to study in the U.S.
He later announced on social media that their respective teams will meet shortly, hoping to break an impasse over tariffs and exports of rare earth minerals.
