Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump on the phone, vowing to respond strongly to Ukraine's attack on Russian air bases and a bridge in Crimea.

Trump wrote on social media that he had a good conversation with Putin on Wednesday but it would not lead to immediate peace with Ukraine.

During the attack, drones were swooping under and over parked aircraft. Some planes caught fire and many were covered in tyres as a rudimentary form of protection.

The Security Service of Ukraine has released more footage of its attacks across multiple air bases in Russia.

Drones, released from containers near their targets, penetrated deep inside Russia, some of them more than 4,000 kilometres from the front lines of the war.

Ukraine says 41 planes were damaged, while U.S. intelligence says 20 were hit and 10 damaged.

The significance of this attack is the nuclear-capable bombers that were targeted -- one of three methods used by Russia to launch nuclear weapons.

Russia said Ukraine targeted airfields in Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo and Ryazan.

Kyiv also attacked a bridge linking Russia and Crimea -- crucial as an artery for Moscow's military supplies.

The daring raids came just as Ukrainian and Russian delegations were about to sit down in Istanbul for a second round of talks on peace, which U.S. President Donald Trump says is still far off.

Trump said he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin in an 85-minute phone call.

The Russian leader, he wrote on Truth Social, has vowed "very strongly" to respond to Ukraine's attacks.

Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy aide to Putin, said the Russian leader told Trump that the Istanbul talks were productive despite Ukraine's attempts to "disrupt" them.

Putin, speaking on a video call to top officials, also accused Ukraine of staging explosions on railways in Russia's Kursk and Bryansk regions, describing them as deliberate attacks on civilians, adding Kyiv has morphed into a terrorist organisation.

Zelenskyy has rebuffed a Russian proposal for ending the three-year war, citing conditions previously rejected, and called for face-to-face talks with Putin.

"We don't need to wait from Putin, especially from his person," said Zelenskyy. "We don't need to wait the time when he will be ready for the peace. And from him we can't wait for his initiative moving to peace. We just have to pressure on him and maybe we will get peace."

Meanwhile, at least 17 people, including children, were wounded in a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv. In Pryluky in the north, five were killed, including a one-year-old child, and six others wounded in another Russian strike.
