Comments by Lin Jian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Japan's handling of past war crimes.

Back in November 2024, Prime Minister Ishiba said during his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Lima that Japan pursues peaceful development in the spirit of facing history squarely and looking to the future.

This time, Prime Minister Ishiba reiterated that Japan should learn from history and remember the lessons, so that Japan would not repeat past mistakes of war, we attach importance to his words.

Having a correct perception and attitude on history and taking concrete actions to reflect on and apologize for its war of aggression is an important prerequisite for Japan's return to the international community after World War II.

And it bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations, Japan's relationship with neighboring countries, and Japan's international image.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

And Japan is again faced with a question of history and of justice. What happened in the past can serve as a lesson for the present.

The four political documents between China and Japan established the important political principle of seeing history as a mirror and looking ahead to the future, to which Japan made serious political commitments.

We hope the Japanese side will earnestly reflect on its historical responsibility, draw lessons from history, have a strong sense of responsibility to history, people and the future.

Make a clean break with the moves of white washing the history of aggression. Follow the path of peaceful development and take concrete actions to earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community.
