Some 20,000 pupils were allocated primary schools through the central allocation system today.

Amost 80 percent of them have got places in one of their top three preferred schools, marking the lowest percentage in recent three years.

Early this morning, parents flocked to a primary school in Yau Ma Tei to apply for a stand-by seat for their kids.

This year, a total of 19,489 children took part in the central allocation system, 1.5 percent more than last year.

79 percent secured their top 3 picks, a 4 percentage point drop compared to last year.

Some lawmakers believe Hong Kong's declining pupil population has prompted parents to aggressively place more desired schools on the list, resulting in a more keen competition and lower satisfaction rate.
