Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with newly appointed U.S. ambassador to China, David Perdue, in hopes of promoting healthy, steady and sustainable bilateral relations.

Wang expressed expectations that the envoy will serve as a credible communicator and a mediator of differences.

Wang welcomed Perdue to his role and said China-U.S. relations have now come to a critical juncture.

In retrospect, "equality and respect are the prerequisites for exchanges between the two sides, and dialogue and cooperation are the only correct choice," Wang said.

The foreign minister addressed recent frustrations and voiced firm opposition to what he called negative measures that undermined consensus reached during talks in Geneva.

He urged the U.S. to create necessary conditions to get ties back on track.

For his part, Perdue affirmed his commitment to maintaining close communication with China in a spirit of mutual trust and attentive dialogue.

He further stressed the importance of keeping positive and constructive exchanges between the two heads of state.
