Suspected Sha Tin bank robber captured after fleeing to mainland

Mainland authorities say they have captured the knife-wielding thief who robbed a Hang Seng Bank branch in Sha Tin yesterday and have handed him over this evening.

The police said the man is also suspected of attempting to break into a house on Clear Water Bay Road prior to the robbery.

The incident a the bank took place at around 5 p.m. on Monday when the man held at knife-point female staff member threatening her with a 30-centimetre-long blade. He then fled after stealing 380,000 dollars.

CCTV footage indicated the man was a resident of a nearby housing estate. He was suspected of changing his clothes back home after committing the crime and fleeing to the Heung Yuen Wai port via private car.

Mainland authorities captured the 49-year-old man at around noon today and handed him over to their Hong Kong counterparts at 9:30 p.m.

The suspect claimed to be unemployed. The police also arrested the man's 34-year-old girlfriend who accompanied him to the mainland.
