The National Security Police have arrested five people over bomb threats targeting central government offices in Hong Kong and the Kai Tak Sports Park.

Police deployed divers to the waters off Hung Hom piers, searching for the mobile phone that the suspects allegedly used to issue fake bomb threats to the police.

The case dates back to April 29th. Police received messages through email and social media threatening to detonate a bomb at a central government office in Hong Kong while calling for the repeal of the national security law and advocating Hong Kong and Taiwan independence.

On May 13th, police received a call, claiming a bomb had been planted at the Kai Tak Sports Park during a concert by Taiwanese band Mayday. The caller used a voice-changing app.

Officers conducted a search and confirmed the threat was false.

National security officers on Monday arrested a 35-year-old man and four women aged between 20 and 38. Four locations were searched with several phones and computers seized. No explosives were found.

Li Kwai-wah, the chief superintendent of the National Security Department of the police force, said they are looking into the suspects' motives, while stressing that threatening to undertake terrorist activities can involve life imprisonment.

He said they will also investigate whether the suspects are linked to "external forces."
