Thousands of Italian troops marched in Rome's centre to mark the 79th anniversary of the Italian republic.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Speaker of the Senate Ignazio La Russa and President Sergio Mattarella were among those cheering on the soldiers and civil servants marching in the parade.

Widely known as "Festa della Repubblica" for Italians, the day of Republic commemorates a 1946 referendum on the future of the country in the wake of the Second World War.

The referendum called on Italian citizens to vote on the forming of government after the fall of Fascism.

Between monarchy and a republic, Italians voted for the second option.

The parade ended with the aerobatic squad of the Italian airforce "Frecce Tricolori" flying over the Colosseum.
