Italy's Mount Etna erupted sending tourists fleeing and huge plumes of smoke into the sky.
Residents and travellers were stunned and then quickly moved away.
Mount Etna, on the island of Sicily,is famous as one of the world's most active volcanoes.
Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology detected a volcanic tremor and a number of explosions of "increasing intensity" in the early hours of Monday. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
The volcanic cloud is expected to disperse quickly.
