Hong Kong's retail sales dropped for a 14th straight month in April, falling by 2.3 percent year-on-year.

Provisional estimates from the Census and Statistics Department put the total value of retail sales at 28.9 billion dollars.

Among the retail outlets, consumer durable goods recorded the greatest decline in sales year-on-year, of which motor vehicles fell by over 50 percent.

Sales for furniture dropped by over 15 percent, while clothing and footwear also went down over 5 percent.

A government spokesman said the retail sales performance showed signs of stabilisation in recent months.

Looking ahead, authorities expect promotions on tourism and mega events will help stimulate the consumption market.
