U.S.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. will never default on its debts as the federal debt ceiling draws closer.
In an interview with CBS's Face the Nation Sunday, Bessent described the country's debt as being "on the warning track" adding "we will never hit the wall."
Republican congressional leaders have attached the increase in the debt limit to the Trump administration's tax and spending bill, which potentially puts avoiding a default at the mercy of complex negotiations over the legislation. The U.S. Senate returns this week to take up the bill.
Bessent did not give a specific date as to when the Treasury runs out of cash. But last month Bessent told lawmakers that the U.S was likely to exhaust its borrowing authority by August if the debt ceiling isn't raised or suspended by then.
