Police are studying the possibility of connecting government surveillance cameras to their system.

It is understood that the measure could be in place as soon as this year.

The scope will extend to various departments including Transport, Housing as well as the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Sources say the move will involve at least a few thousands CCTV cameras.

Police estimate that there will be 2,000 sets of surveillance cameras by the end of this year, with 2,500 more in the next few years.

The force also said more functions such as facial recognition will be incorporated into the CCTV system in a bid to enhance the efficiency in detecting crime.
