Many people are celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival by eating traditional rice dumplings. A store in Central has managed to entice local shoppers with its traditional Hong Kong flavours.
Open the steam basket, and you'll smell the aroma of traditional rice dumplings. Eating "zong zi" remains a ritual for countless locals during the Dragon Boat festival.
As crowds flocked to the mainland, sales of local rice dumplings have dropped. Some shops chose to slash prices to boost sales.
Mrs Yuen, the owner of this time-honoured brand in Central, banked on traditional Hong Kong flavours to attract customers. She has managed to sell an average of 20,000 rice dumplings each year.
The shop started wrapping roughly 1,000 rice dumplings per day a month before the festival. These are their signature "Dragon Boat Rice Dumplings."
From sweet red beans to luxurious abalone, savoury and sweet dumplings, there is something for everyone.
Some local residents said they are more familiar with the taste of local rice dumplings, and that Hong Kong's traditional flavours are priceless.
Mrs Yuen noted that the general public has become more health-conscious and less inclined toward overly sweet flavour. Therefore, they cut back on sugar when preparing the filling ingredients for the sweet rice dumplings.
The procedure for wrapping rice dumplings is complicated. The owner said the younger generation seems reluctant to embrace the labour-intensive process.
Mrs Yuen said her hands get itchy and blistered from wrapping rice dumplings, but she will persist year by year while she still can.
