A mini holiday for the Dragon Boat Festival kicks off in the mainland today. As of 4 p.m., Hong Kong welcomed some 237,000 tourists, while more than 389,000 people left the city.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board today launches a nine-day carnival in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Even without actually taking part in the dragon boat races, revellers can still feel the high spirits along the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade.

Props of twin panda cubs "Jia Jia" and "De De" together with four giant pandas also appear in festive attire, inviting visitors to join in with the celebrations.

Ten food and beverage stalls feature themed products, such as rice dumplings and ice pops. This stallholder said they were selling dragon boat red bean pastry with pandan cake.

This mainland tourist said she gave each of her children 100 dollars to buy their favourite food. She said the food here was more expensive than in the mainland.

The Dragon Boat Food Lane will span two weekends where revellers can enjoy the International Dragon Boat Races which will be held at the next weekend.

Speaking on a radio programme, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said she expected 16 percent more inbound visitors compared to normal days.

She said Hong Kong is full of attractions and events and the government will gear up to welcome visitors.
