China has appointed Zhou Ji as the new Director of Beijing's Liaison Office in Hong Kong, replacing Zheng Yanxiong.

According to a notice from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security on Friday evening, 61-year-old Zhou Ji will also serve as the National Security Affairs Advisor to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Committee for Safeguarding National Security.

Zhou visited Hong Kong in December last year to attend the naming ceremony for the giant pandas at Ocean Park.

He served as a Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council in July 2023.

Zhou, a native of Xiangyang in Hubei province, has spent some 36 years of his career in his hometown. He graduated from the Hubei University of Technology.

His predecessor, Zheng Yanxiong, was appointed to the post in 2023.
