An 18-year-old tuberculosis patient has been issued with a mandatory isolation order after discharging himself from hospital and failing to return to the clinic for scheduled treatment.

The secondary school student is currently in isolation at Princess Margaret Hospital as ordered by the Centre for Health Protection.

On May 13th, the patient was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment with symptoms including shortness of breath, blood in sputum and fever.

He was admitted on the same day. He discharged himself from the hospital on Sunday, going against doctor's advice.

He was referred to the centre's chest clinic for follow-up because of the need to continue receiving fully supervised medication. But he failed to continue treatment at the clinic as scheduled.

Considering the transmission risk of stopping treatment, the centre issued the patient with a mandatory isolation order.

The CHP is arranging screening for the students and teachers from his school. No other infections have been detected so far.
