A night market in Guiyang, the provincial capital of Guizhou on the Chinese mainland, is fast becoming a model for how to keep the city bustling, and business booming both day and night.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee also visited the market when he was in Guiyang two years ago.
Guiyang brands itself as a "City of Music." Its only official night market, Qingyun Market, also features a free space for live music performances.
Established as Guiyang's first official night economy demonstration zone, the market currently houses around 280 stalls, including 80 dedicated to local specialties.
No two stalls serve the same food, and many operate until dawn, earning the venue the nickname "Midnight Diner."
This tourist said Shanghai, where she is from, is a big city with restaurants mostly in malls. Here it's more down-to-earth and full of "street life" with snacks that are cheap and delicious.
This visitor from Hong Kong said the market is home to many small shops and creative local brands. The street food scene and nightlife here are way more vibrant than in Hong Kong.
But the vibrant night market was overshadowed by the COVID pandemic in 2020. At the time, local authorities decided to shut down four such streets due to hygiene concerns.
Only Qingyun Road was preserved and given a facelift. Nearly 200 million yuan was invested in expanding it into the bustling hub it is today.
Out of more than 200 original vendors, about half returned after the renovation, including some long-established businesses.
Liu, a manager at a grilled fish restaurant, recalled how they were worried before the revamp. But now with more tourists, even daytime crowds have grown in size.
The market recorded around 18 million visitors last year, with over 600 million yuan in total sales.
While international visitors remain a tiny fraction of them, with the current economic uncertainty, the market's management expects the visitor numbers to surpass 20 million and the sales volume to reach 750 million yuan this year.
