A patient at United Christian Hospital developed complications after a nasogastric tube was misplaced.

The patient underwent the surgery on Monday. The paramedics then took an X-ray of him.

At about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, another doctor assessed his condition and instructed the nurse to feed him through the tube.

The nurse took gastric juice for pH test according to the procedure. The reading was consistent with the gastric juice, so the medicine and nutritional milk were infused according to guidelines.

After around seven hours when the staff checked on the patient, the tube allegedly dislocated -- and the feeding was halted immediately.

But the problem allegedly led to pneumothorax -- which is the collection of air between the lung and the chest wall -- as well as fluid buildup in the chest. The patient underwent chest drainage and is currently in stable condition.

The Hospital Authority has set up a committee to look into the incident. A report will be submitted within eight weeks.
