On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in a statement that the government will start "aggressively" revoking visas of Chinese students, including those studying in "critical fields" or have connections with the Chinese Communist Party.

Rubio did not specify how extensively the revocations would be applied.

He further noted that the state department will revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

China is the second-largest source of international students in America after India. Around 277,000 Chinese students were in the U.S. in the 2023-24 academic year, according to figures from the Institute of International Education.
