Rongjiang county in Guizhou province has been a frequent supplier of vegetables to both Hong Kong and Macao in recent years.
With the rise in popularity of the region's produce, some local farmers pointed out how they have been lifting themselves out of their economic woes.
Residents looking for fresh vegetables in the city's markets may increasingly come across these green peppers from Rongjiang.
With the crop ready for harvest in just 55 days, the peppers are planted on a large-scale basis and are readily available at all times.
Some local departments said Rongjiang delivers 1,600 tonnes of vegetables to the Greater Bay Area every year. This as some local farmers pointed out while the soil in Rongjiang may not be as fertile as Shandong or Yunnan, there are far less pollutants in its content.
Despite the rise in their popularity, Rongjiang's fresh produce business is barely turning a profit for many in the region.
This manager of a local fresh produce company noted the increased economic risks of the vegetable trade in recent years, but added they are looking towards developing new produce to boost sales.
In a bid to alleviate their financial woes, a group of local women aged between their 60s and 70s began promoting their products on social media platforms through song and dance while dressed in ethnic minority clothing. Their live broadcasts take place twice a day, and claimed they are already seeing positive effects.
Meanwhile, the local government said it has already established a new media organisation in 2021 to help nurture the locals' ability to promote their products via social media, having trained more than 40,000 people as of now.
