The 46th Associated of Southeast Asian Nations summit kicked off today in Kuala Lumpur with U.S. tariffs and Myanmar taking centre stage.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as host and current chair, said in his opening remarks that ASEAN must forge a common front to tackle global issues.
Anwar welcomed all leaders of ASEAN countries to Kuala Lumpur. He later said that he has written to U.S. President Donald Trump seeking a meeting with the bloc to discuss tariffs. Officials are hopeful it could happen later this year.
Many ASEAN countries rely on exports to the U.S., as they try to deal with American tariffs ranging from 10 to 49 percent.
Myanmar has been ravaged by four-year deadly civil war following a military coup in 2021. Anwar said ASEAN leaders will try to bring together the military government and armed opposition groups for talks.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang has arrived in Malaysia and will meet ASEAN leaders on Tuesday in a joint meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
