President Donald Trump said the U.S. will delay imposing a 50 percent tariff on goods from the European Union from June 1st until July 9th to buy time for negotiations.

Just days ago, Donald Trump said he would no longer negotiate with the European Union on trade. He said EU imports would be subject to 50 percent tariffs and it would go into effect on June 1 because the 27-member bloc was "very difficult to deal with."

On Sunday, in typical Trump fashion, he said he would delay the tariffs until July 9th after a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

U.S. President Donald Trump said: "She just called me, as you know. And she asked for an extension on the June 1st date. And she said she wants to get down to serious negotiation, because I told you specifically, and I told anybody that would listen. They have to do that. And we had a very nice call, and I agreed to move it. I believe July 9th would be the date. That was the date she requested. Could we move it from June 1st to July 9th? And I agreed to do that and that she said we will rapidly get together and see if we can work something out."

In a social media post, Von der Leyen said she had a "good call" with Trump and the EU was ready to move quickly. Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively, she said, adding they needed until July 9th to reach a good deal.

Trump's tariff policies have shaken world markets and threaten to drag down the global economy. He announced major tariff hikes on many countries in April, particularly China, before backing off in favour of talks.

The U.S. has since had negotiations with China and Britain but progress with the EU has been more limited.

In 2024, EU exports to the U.S. were dominated by medicinal and pharmaceutical goods followed by vehicles and aircrafts and related products.
